Arthur B. Bates, age 92 years, died October 23, 1989 at Bay Medical Care Facility. He was born in Tuscola, April 1, 1897 and had resided in Vassar until coming to Bay City 25 years ago. He married Relva Lennox and she preceded his death.

He is survived by his children: Marie Jones and her husband Lyle of Grand Rapids, and Joyce Tinglan of Bay City; 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Reba O'Brien of Pero Lake.

He was a member of Fremont Avenue Methodist Church and the Church Choir. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1964 and was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Funeral services Friday at 1:00pm at Penzien & Steele Funeral Home. The Rev. James H. McLaurin will officiate with interment at Riverside Cemetery in Vassar.

Parents were George and Cora Bates. He and Relva Beal Lennox graduated from Vassar High School in 1914, he served in US Army during WWI from Sept 1918 to Dec 1918, they were married December 25, 1918. They had 2 daughters, Joyce and Marie. Relva died May 1969. He married Marie Casselman (b: Dec 10, 1897, d: Mar 19, 1978).
