Illness Is Fatal To Aged Farmer
Samuel Chandler Succumbs Sunday.
Samuel V. Chandler, age 74, one of the community’s best known farmers and church leaders, died at 6:30 Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wesley Penrose, 300 North Roosevelt Avenue where he had been cared for since July 25th. The aged man, who had been ill for several months from complications attendant with advancing age, made his home in Salt Creek township, Bloomington Route Three, where he farmed.
A native of this county, Mr. Chandler was born here on March 23, 1872 to William R. and Nancy Scott Chandler, and had passed his entire lifetime in this community.
Early in life he became affiliated with the Friendship Church, later transferring his membership to the Knight Ridge church. He has been a member, Sunday School Superintendent and deacon, of the Knight Ridge church for the past 27 years and as such, was an accepted leader in the community in which he resided for so many years.
As a member of the regular army, Mr. Chandler served for five years, participating in the Sioux Indian wars.
On September 18, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Deckard, who survives. He also leaves, in addition to the daughter at whose home he died, two sons, Elmer R. Chandler of Bloomington and Emanuel F. Chandler of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Pryor of this county; a brother, Mose Chandler of Lawrence county, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Knight Ridge church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Pall bearers will be Phillip Morrison, Virgil Chitwood, Russell Groce, Harold Brown, Elmer Chandler, Jr., and Winfrey Deckard. Flower bearers will be Martha Brown, Mildred Chandler, Mary Deckard, Billy Penrose, Jean Deckard, and Ruth Pate.
