In the 1900 census 4-year-old Lewis is living with his parents and siblings Bruce 12, Nora 10, James 8, Mamie 6, Jesse 3, and Sherman 9 months in rural Bingham Township, Orange County, NC. Bingham is just west of Chapel Hill. His father is farming.
In the 1910 census 14-year-old Lewis is living with his parents and siblings Nora 20, James 18, Mamie 16, Jesse 13, Sherman 10, Carrie 8, Mabel 6, Maggie 4, and Charlie 2, in Thompson Township, Alamance County, NC. Thompson is the next township west of Bingham. His father is still farming.
Lewis reported to the Alamance County draft board, was inducted, and entrained for Camp Grant, Rockford, Illinois, on 30 Mar 1918.
Lewis sailed for France with Company D of the 323rd Labor Battalion from Hoboken, NJ aboard the USS Manchuria on 10 Jul 1918. His person to contact in case of emergency was his mother, Fannie Alston, back in Saxapahaw.
Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 2, North Carolina, show Privates: Alston, Lewis, from Saxapahaw as Died of Disease 18 Jan 1919. Since he's buried at Suresnes he was likely treated at the American Red Cross Hospital in Paris.
