ASA WILKES, son of Abner and Martha Wilkes, was born in Chester County, South Carolina in 1798. He, with his mother and unmarried sisters, moved to Morgan County, Alabama, about 1822. It is thought that the move was made to join John Cranford and his family. John Cranford had married, Elizabeth Wilkes, a sister of Asa Wilkes, and had moved to Morgan County about 1822. It is possible that Asa and his mother and sisters moved to Alabama along with John Cranford and his family. Asa Wilkes and Hester Barclay were married in Morgan County, Alabama on 9 March 1825. She was the daughter of Robert Barclay, who was born in Ireland in 1763 and came to South Carolina with his father in 1769, served as a private under General Sumter towards the close of the Revolutionary War, and migrated to Morgan County in 1816 where he died on 26 July 1848. Asa Wilkes was a farmer and moved to Fayette County, Alabama shortly after his marriage. He was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in the eastern part of Fayette County. The following children were born of this marriage:
A. Robert Wilkes
B. James Wilkes
C. Sarah Wilkes, never married
