Edwin Robinson was born in 1878 at Stonely, a hamlet bordering on Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire. He was the second on nine children born to George Robinson (1853-1913) and his wife, Emily (“Emma”) Northfield (1854-1938). Despite Emily being a member of the Moravian Church, the marriage of Edwin’s took place at the Anglican parish church of St Leonard in the village of Southoe from where hailed the Northfield family.

Edwin was one of the few male members of his family to leave the small agricultural towns, villages, and hamlets of Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire. He was employed in Oxfordshire when he married Bertha Mary Tickner at Headington in 1907. Their first son, James Edwin Robinson, was born in Middlesex on 4 February 1909. By 1911, Edwin had returned to Kimbolton with Bertha and James, living at Churchyard Cottage and working as a postman. A second son, George Lionel Robinson was born early in 1911, dying in the late summer of the following year. Edwin was killed in action in the Battle of Épehy on 18 September 1918. His name is listed among the war dead on the Kimbolton war memorial.
