"Lance Corporal Harry Andrews, the Royal Sussex Regiment and 3 Troop, No. 10 Inter Allied Commando, attached to 47 Royal Marine Commando, was killed in Normandy during Operation Overlord.

Lance Corporal Andrews was born Hans Richard Arenstein in Erfurt, Germany, in 1922. In 1938, he was one of nearly 10,000 mostly-Jewish children removed from Germany in the Kindertransport rescue operation - parents could not accompany their children, and by 1944 his mother and father were living in Brazil. He lived at the Turner's Court Colony in Oxfordshire and began a locksmith apprenticeship.

In 1940 Lance Corporal Andrews was interned at the Hutchinson Internment camp on the Isle of Man, but at a tribunal it was decided to give him full exemption from internment. His police registration certificate described him as "Male enemy alien - exemption from internment (refugee)". He joined the Royal Pioneer Corps, then enlisted with the Royal Sussex Regiment, and was serving with 47 Commando at the time of his death. Lance Corporal Andrews had been injured on D-Day, and sadly just over two months later was killed at Senneville on an enemy minefield.
Harry, who was 22 years old, lies buried in the Ranville War Cemetery in Normandy."
