Hurtle, aged 19 years,enlisted in the AIF on the same day, 28/7/1915, as his brother, Ernest, aged 26 years 10 months and they both embarked at Adelaide, S.A. for active service abroad on 27/10/1915 per HMAT "Benalla" (A24).
His brother, also serving with the Australian Infantry, A.I.F. 50th Bn Private Ernest Herbert Harvey also fell.His Service Number was 3349-he was killed 16th August 1916
They were sons of James and Martha Matilda Harvey.
