Service Number 31435231
Army 75th Infantry Division 290th Reg L Company (290 L) 3rd Platoon.
KIA near Ostuck (aka Oestrich) heading towards Dortmund, Germany
Awarded the Air Medal With Gold Star and Purple Heart.
Learned of this Fallen Veteran in 1984 from a grand-uncle who happened to lived next-door to relatives on my mother's side. Developed the research and identity of this soldier in 2011!
His father, William J. Walsh, of Chelsea, MA, could not be located after the war. His mother predeceased him. His sister disappeared into mental health care sometime around 1946. He was survived by half-brothers and sisters on his mother's whose name last name was Kelly. He was known to cousins in Chelsea, especially to Rita *Rich) Richards and Walter Rich.
In 2011, through some extreme research diligence and persistence I was able to track down a surviving member of this platoon was there when PFC Walsh was KIA. His squad leader, Tom Kreps, was located via Gil Nelson from the 75th Division Veteran's Association and I got to hear the story about the circumstances surrounding his casualty. You can read for yourself Tom Kreb's story mentioning Robert Walsh here: https://www.americanveteranscenter.org/2015/07/thomas-krebs-story/
PFC Walsh was just a few days away from the the termination of major combat operations in Germany. It's a privilege, honor and extremely good fortune to had been able to follow this relatives life from scant impressions in vital records to eyewitnesses.
