PFC H.E. Bills Posthumously
Awarded Medal Former Hazelhurst
Resident Nephew of Local Women
PFC Howard E. Bills, 19, former
resident of Hazelhurst, who was killed
in action in Italy on June 2,
has been awarded the Silver Star,
one of the highest awards made by
the government for gallantry in
action, posthumously. The medal
was presented to his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Raymond Bills of Clarion,
Pa., by an officer of the Third Service
Command in their home on
Friday afternoon, December 8.
Pfc. Bills was inducted into the
Army in August, 1943, and received
his basic training at Camp Croft,
S. C. Sent to North Africa in March,
1944, he was later moved into Italy.
'Born March 13,1925 in Hazelhurst,
he attended the Clarion Senior High
school before his induction into the
army.
Surviving him besides his parents
are three brothers, Corp. Donald
Bills, USMC, Columbia, S. C.,
Robert and Richard, and one sister,
Theresa, all at home; a grandmother,
Mrs. Minnie Warfle of Hazelhurst;
two uncles, Howard Warfle
of Hazelhurst and Edwin Warfle of
Rew, and four aunts, Mrs. Hazel
Pascuzzi and Mrs." Thomas Ross of
Smethport, Mrs. Marvin Peterson
and Mrs. Marvel Lang of Mt. Jewett.
