Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 20 Apr 1900
"Ensign C. Newton died at his home in Jersey City, N. J., last Sunday after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia. The deceased was the only son of the late Judge Eben Newton, and was born in Canfield June 7, 1837. Soon after attaining his majority he married Miss Effie Hall of Warren, who with two children born to them, Eben W. Newton of Toledo and Mrs. Thalia Butts of Providence, R. I., survives him. Mr. Newton leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lois Mears of Madison, Wis., and Mrs. Hannah VanHyning of Cleveland. For many years Mr. Newton was among the most extensive dealers in livestock in this section. He was noted far and near for his fair dealing, and his honest, straightforward business methods won for him a host of friends and admirers in every walk of life. In the spring of 1877 he removed to New York and opened extensive stockyards and through him most of the stock shipped from this section was sold. He was among the largest shippers of live stock to foreign markets. The remains were brought to Canfield Tuesday. Funeral services held in the Presbyterian Church at 1:30 p.m. were largely attended. Dr. Dickson officiated and paid beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. Interment in the village cemetery. The pallbearers were W. H. Clark, Albert Platt, Henry Meeker, Almus Beardsley, James Williams and S. W. Brainerd."
