Private Abele Giuliani, born in Magugnano, Verona, Italy 23 Dec 1890. Magagnano is in northern Italy on the east side of Lake Garda, 25 miles NE of Verona.
On his Apr 1917 draft registration 27-year-old Abelle is living in North Windsor Locks, CT. Windsor Locks is on the Connecticut River halfway between Hartford and Springfield. He had not yet declared in Intention to become a US Citizen. He is a shoemaker employed by John Castellini on Main Street in Windsor Locks. He listed his father and mother in Italy as dependents. He was of medium height and stout build with brown eyes and dark hair. I found a listing for him in Ancestry with parents Cirillo and Caterina Giuliani but his birth date was off by 15 years (1875) so may not have been his parents.
Abele was inducted 26 Apr 1918 at Thompsonville, CT. He was assigned to the 29th Company of the 8th Battalion of the 152nd Depo Brigade at Camp Upton, New York until 20 May 1918 when he was transferred to Company C of the 301st Infantry Regiment of the National Guard.
Abele sailed for France with Company E of the 301st Infantry Regiment aboard the SS RMS Cedric from New York City on 6 Jul 1918. His person to notify in case of emergency was his brother, John, at 257 Bank Street in Waterbury.
Upon arrival in France, about 16 Jul 1918, Abele was assigned to Company F of the 59th Infantry Regiment attached to the 4th Division.
The 4th Division was on the far left flank of the Saint Mihiel offensive from 12-16 Sep 1918.
The Division was moved to the jump-off line in the Meuse Argonne offensive beginning 26 Sep 1918. The 79th Division was on their left flank and the 80th Division was on their right flank. The 4th Division came off the line in the Meuse Argonne on 13 Oct just north of Nantillois.
Abele came down with pneumonia and was sent 172 miles SSW to Base Hospital No 25 at the AEF Evacuation Hospital Center in Allerey-sur-Saone, France. Base Hospital No 25 was one of a cluster of about ten base hospital units on the north side of the current day D970 (Rte De Beaune) just northwest of Allerey. Allerey-sur-Saone is on the Saone River in east central France 33 miles due south of Dijon and 86 miles due north of Lyon.
Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 1, Connecticut, show Privates: Giuliani, Abele, from Waterbury as Died of Disease 29 Oct 1918. His brother, John, at 257 Bank Street in Waterbury was notified of his death.
Abele is listed with five others who died in service during WWI on the Hartford County War Memorial in Windsor Locks, Ct.
