Pvt. Dan Holton, AEF SN# 1556614, Co E. 2nd Battalion, 144th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 72nd Brigade, 36th Division, AEF.
Died of Disease (Tuberculosis Pulmonary) while assigned to Co E. while at AEF Base Hospital No #17 in the French city of Dijon, France on the morning of Sunday, February 9th, 1919.
Upon Pvt. Holton's death, Pvt. Holton was initially interred at Grave #175, American Section, French Civil Cemetery, Des Pejoces, Dijon, France on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 12th, 1919, and was finally reinterred at Grave #1, Row #16, Section A at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt-Regniéville, France on the afternoon of Monday, June 12th, 1922.
Private Dan Holton, born 10 Jan 1894, was the son of James M Holton and Mary Catherine (Furlong) Holton of Mammoth Cave, Edmonson County, Kentucky. Mammoth Cave is 93 miles south and a little west of Louisville, Ky.
Dan’s mother died 16 Aug 1901 at age 34 when Dan was 7 years old.
In the 1910 census 15-year-old Dan is living with his father and stepmother Melissa (Johnson) and sister Minnie 13, in rural Parker, Edmonson County. His father is farming.
Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 1, Kentucky show Privates: Holton, Dan from Mammoth Cave as Died of Disease 9 Feb 1919.
