Born in New Britain, Monsignor moved to Florida in 1988, from Bridgeport. He attended St. Thomas Minor Seminary in Bloomfield, and St. Mary s Seminary in Baltimore, Md., where he earned both his bachelor of arts in religious education divinity degrees. He later returned to school to earn his master of arts in religious education from Fairfield University. Monsignor was a Roman Catholic priest ordained may 6, 1948, in St. Joseph s Cathedral in Hartford. He served as associate pastor at Sacrada Familia in Corozal, Puerto Rico, and co-founded Our Lady of Providence in Bridgeport, in 1957, the first Hispanic church in the Diocese of Bridgeport. He also founded Hispanic Missions in both Stamford and Norwalk. In 1964 he was named "Papal Chamberlain" by Pope Paul VI. He served as Diocesan director of the Hispanic Apostolic and coordinator of the religious education for the spanish speaking. He was also the Hispanic columnist for the Diocesam newspaper, Fairfield County Catholic. He retired to New Smyrna Beach and assisted at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Epiphany Catholic Church of Port Orange and most recently, St. Jude s Catholic Church of Ocala. Monsignor Campagnone also wrote, edited and published the Catholic Journal, an adult religious education monthly. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as chaplain for the Edgewater Police Department. Monsignor is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Robert Caslen, of New Smyrna Beach; four nephews, Gary S. Caslen, Colonel Robert L. Caslen Jr., Lt. Colonel Mark A. Caslen and Michael Caslen; housekeeper and caregiver, Maria R. Rivera, of Edgewater; three grand nephews; and three grand nieces. The family suggest s memorial donations to a charity of one s choice. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by bishop William E. Lori. Interment will be in St. Mary s Cemetery New Britain. MSGR Campagone will lay in state Tuesday, morning after 9 a.m. in St. Peter s Church, 695 Colorado Avenue, Bridgeport.MSGR. did not forget his friends the Dougiello family who helped the Hispanic community, and who will be directing his funeral.
