Pfc. Carlson died, just 12 days after his 25th birthday, at Ponti sul Mincio, Italy, a war hero in the Battle for Mount Casale in Italy. He was killed just nine days before the end of the war. Germany surrendered in Italy two days after Pfc. Carlson's death, and VE-Day was just six days after that, on May 8, 1945.
