Richard Albert Carlson was the fourth child of six of Homer and Mary Carlson of St. Paul, Minnesota. He never married. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 10, 1941 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.

During World War II, Pfc. Carlson served with the 616th Field Artillery Battalion, 10th Mountain Division. Awards: Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Italian Cross and Bronze Medal of Military Valor.

Pfc. Carlson died, just 12 days after his 25th birthday, at Ponti sul Mincio, Italy, a war hero in the Battle for Mount Casale in Italy. He was killed just nine days before the end of the war. Germany surrendered in Italy two days after Pfc. Carlson's death, and VE-Day was just six days after that, on May 8, 1945.
