1LT Wells Lewis, son of Sinclair Lewis and Grace Hegger Lewis, is buried at the Epinal American Cemetery, Epinal, Vosges, Lorraine, France, Plot: B Row: 41 Grave: 31. He entered the service from New York. At the time of his death he was a First Lieutenant with the U.S. Army, Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre

He was the only child of Sinclair Lewis the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature for his book "Main Street" Graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard and joined the Army one year before the US entry into the war as a private. Spoke French, German and Italian. Published his first book at age 21. Killed in the rescue of the "Lost Battalion" from the 36th Infantry Dvision. Was serving as BG Dahlquist's aide and died in his arms when struck in the head by a German MG bullet.

General Dahlquist, commander 36th Infantry Division at the funeral of his aide Lt. Wells Lewis October 1944. Lt. Lewis, the eldest son of Sinclair Lewis ( the first American to receive the Nobel prize for literature) was killed while he, Gen Dahlquist and several others where discussing how to reach the 1st Bn, 141st Infantry Regiment which had been cut off in the Vosges mountain. Lewis' was shot while standing next to the General his blood splattered Dahlquist's uniform. Lt. Lewis' death effected Gen. Dahlquist deeply, in a letter to Sinclair Lewis he noted “He was dead before I laid him on the ground. I was present at the services, and it was as though my own son was being buried.”
