Leonard Aston was born in 1897 in Harpurhey, Manchester. He was the second son of four to Alfred Aston and Harriett Parker, both of Manchester.

In 1901, Leonard, then aged 4yrs old, and his family can be found living at 8 Ringley Street, Harpurhey and then 10yrs later, aged 14yrs, in 1911 at 7 Cicero Street, Moston.

In 1915, Leonard signed up to join the Manchester Regiment and was assigned to the 16th Battallion.

16th (Service) Battalion (1st City):
Formed in Manchester on 28 August 1914. Initially established at Heaton Park but moved in April 1915 to Belton Park, where placed under command of 90th Brigade in 30th Division. Moved on to Larkhill in September 1915.
6 November 1915 : landed in France.

On the 1st July 1916,during the Battle of the Somme, Leonard was killed in action. During the war, Leonard was awarded with three military medals.
