Wife of Rueben Gage who came to Texas abt. 1834 and received a land grant for a League of land as a colonist. He and Abigail along with several of their children returned to Arkansas prior to 1840 as they are listed in the 1840 Census in Saline County Arkansas. Reuben died in Arkansas 1844, burial location unkown.

Mother of Moses Gage, who did not return to Arkansas with his parents, and is buried here. Presumably Abigail returned to Texas upon the death of Reuben. She is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Census as living in the same household with Moses and family in Bastrop County, Texas.

Aunt of General Edward Burleson of Texas Revolution Fame.

Information on the Gage burial locations in this cemetery was obtained from the Claiborne family records, courtesy of Mattie Claiborne, and James Edwards, both of whom I was blessed enough to meet, befriend, and gain a lot of information from. Be sure to check the cemetery page and the photo of the Historical Marker.

The Gage burials in this cemetery were marked by rocks but mapped in the Claiborne family records. You can see the original rock/headstone marker behind the headstone in this photo. New headstones were purchased, for all the known Gage graves in this cemetery, in 2001, through generous donations from members of the Gage Family Reunion Association, who are descendants of James Gage and Elanora Pointer Gage. There are variations on Abigail's birth year (1770, 1771, 1772, 1774) and we had the 1771 year, based on early researchers information, put on this headstone. Census records of 1850 and 1860 indicate her birth year as 1772, however according to the Reuben Gage family bible the birth year was 1774.

There is a reference of an Abigail Adair Burleson, born 1774 in Rutherford, Tennessee, married to a Daniel Gage, with a child named Nancy. That reference shows the same death date/location as this one. More confusion seems to come from Aaron Burleson's son John Burleson, this Abigail's brother, marrying an Abigail Adair, per Aaron's will. See Aaron Burleson's FAG listing for more information on that.

While there is much confusion about the many Abigail Burlesons of record there is no question that the burial in this cemetery is the wife of Reuben Gage.
