Enlisted in the US Army in 1917 and served in France as a mechanic with the 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division during World War 1. He died of wounds received during the Aisne-Marne Offensive in the area of the Chateau-du-Diable west of Fismes, near Bazoche-sur-Vesle, on the Vesle River.
