William's father was Rufus Knotts (based on death cert), and his mother was Frances Andrews (based on census records and DNA matching).

After William's birth, Rufus Knotts later married Matilda Flesher on 2 Feb 1859. That marriage record shows his residence as Roane County, but he then moved to Calhoun County. Rufus and Matilda had several children including another son named William R. Knotts born in 1863.

Frances Andrews married William Smith on 30 May 1858 and appears in Roane County 1860 census with 5 year old William, her husband William Smith, and their 1 year old daughter Mary Jane Smith. William Smith died during the civil war in 1864, Frances then married Thomas Deal in 1868 but she died in 1872 at age 35.

William Knotts appears in Roane County 1880 census with Frances's sister (his aunt) Permelia Andrews Spencer, and Frances's mother (his grandmother) Olive Andrews.

William first married Rebecca Webb on 4 Sep 1882 in Roane County, they had 4 children: Roy Lee, Bertie, William Madison, and Leota.

After his first wife's death, William had 5 more children with Melissa White (married 12 Aug 1904).
