Ernest served as a Technical Sergeant on B-26C #42-107811, 575th Bomber Squadron, 391st Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in York County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of textiles and also as Single, without dependents.

Ernest was "Killed In Action" when his B-26 was shot down by enemy flak and crashed near Trois-Fonds, France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Son of Henry & Imelda Martel.

His brother, Corp Arthur R Martel, also died in "Line Of Duty" during the war and is also interred in France at Epinal.
