PFC Joseph Denham died at 'The Battle of Noemfoor' on Noemfoor Island near New Guinea.

Numfor (also Numfoor, Noemfoor, Noemfoer) is one of the Schouten Islands (also known as the Biak Islands) in Papua province, Western New Guinea, northeastern Indonesia.

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Denham, of near Eighty Eight, were notified that their son, Pfc. Earl Denham, 25, was killed in action August 12. They had recently received a letter from him stating that he had been transferred from New Guinea to a new base and that he was writing from a foxhole. He intimated in the letter that he might not survive conflict he was engaged in. The letter was written August 5th. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Elmore, of Eighty Eight; two half-sisters, Mrs. Eva Richardson, Eighty Eight, and Mrs. Lee Shipley, of Elbow Springs; five half brothers-Fay Denham, Eighty Eight, Luther and Raymond Hunt, of California, Wyckliffe Hunt, Iowa, and Leonard Hunt, Eighty Eight.
