Joseph was the son of Joseph and Jane "Jennie" Lehew Gordon. His first wife was Mary Delauter and they had 2 children: Elmer and Cora Carter . Mary died in 1878. Joseph then married Margaret Fouche. They had these children: May Ifert, Mollie Beachley, Clarence, Elsie Kaetzel, Joseph, Roy, Nelleye Chaney, Howard, Norman, Hazel Wilhide and Vernon. Joseph was also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a sister, Julia Coulter.
Joseph was predeceased by his daughter Mollie in 1910, and sons Roy and Howard, both in 1906.
