Alex "Sonny" Morton, 71, of Brentwood Rd., Morganton, NC went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 5, 2010 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Wake County, NC on December 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Alex Morton, II and Vicie Mae Walker Morton. Sonny attended Mtn. View #2 Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and retired from Southern Devices. After his retirement he worked as a local handyman. He loved the flea market, fishing, and trading. He also loved watching his grandson's ball games.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 50 years, Clara Thelma Mashburn Morton of the home; a daughter, Cynthia M. Attaway and husband, Mark, of Morganton; a son, Jeff Morton of Morganton; grandchildren, Austin and Aaron Attaway; brothers, Sammy and Doug Morton; and sisters, Katie Powell, Faye McGalliard, and Dorothy Benfield. In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a sister Mary Basnett, and a brother, Charlie Morton.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Mashburn officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion, NC with military honors provided by Valdese American Legion Post #234.
