James Arlen Godwin was born January 15, 1936 in Vernon, Texas, to Thomas Carl and Velma Irene Edwards Godwin. Arlen went to the U. S. Air Force in 1956, went to Air Traffic Controller School, and was assigned to Madill AFB in Florida. When his father got sick in 1957, Arlen got a compassionate transfer to Reese AFB in Lubbock to help the family out with his dad. After his dad died Arlen stayed on at Reece Air Force Base until discharged in 1960.

Arlen married Barbara Kay Eastham on June 15, 1958, in Lubbock, Texas. They had three daughters, Zenda Lenee, Kimberly Zoe, and Gala Denise. Arlen was working as a traffic controller at the Amarillo Airport at the time of his death on September 17, 1980.

Arlen is survived by his immediate family and his brothers, Kenneth, Truman, and J. B. Godwin, and a sister, Doris Koshers, as well as many nieces,nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
