Isaac was the son of William and Rebecca Alderman. On June 16, 1810 he married Rachel DeFreise whose father was said to have come from France with Lafayette and fought in the Revolutionary War to help America win Independence.
Sometime before 1821, Isaac and Rachel moved their family to Old Bedford, now in Connecticut but then in the state of New York. In 1823 the family moved once more to Warsaw, Genesee County in western New York. There were six children by then, four more were born later to Isaac and Rachel and one to Isaac and his second wife Roxey Jenison. Rachel died at the birth of her youngest child John. She and her son are buried in the same grave in Warsaw.
