James Fisher was the perfect Christmas gift for his family when he was born on Christmas day, 1835 in Hanover Township, Michigan. His parents were Marshall and Hannah Fisher, who were immigrants from England. James had an older brother, Thomas, and a sister, Sarah, was born later.
James's childhood was a happy one, and he received a good education in two different schools.

In 1872, he married Nancey Soules. They had four children: two daughters who died in infancy, and two sons; Thomas and Bert.

James was "highly esteemed for his honesty and integrity" and was described as "a kind and loving father."
James and Nancy were Quakers and active members of the Friends church, taking part in all of their activities. James was "converted to God" in his youth.
James was "loyal to his home, family, and God", and was sadly missed by his family, friends, and neighbors. He passed away at his home on May 5, 1914. He was 78 year old and had been sick for a long time with complications from epilepsy. His pastor, Rev. E. W. Ellinger, officiated his funeral.
