Eugene was born on a farm nr Montecello, the s/o Michael & Mary KIRKLEY Henely. His parents, both natives of Ohio, came to Iowa in covered wagons in 1853 and settled nr Monticello, where his dad was a farmer until his death in 1902. His mom d. in 1918.


In 1890, Eugene graduated from Iowa State College.


Then, he wed Louise Miller in 1892, who was the dau./o Alexander James & Mary Louise McCOLM Miller of Johnson County.


Eugene was, then, assigned as the head of Oxford, Iowa schools, where he remained for 9 years.


For the next 6 years, he was the superintendent of schools in Brooklyn, and in 1905 became superintendent at Grinnell for the next 23 years.


His wife survived him as well as daughters Inez Louise Henely, Margaret HENELY Black, and her son, Eugene Charlton Black.


A very fine and lasting tribute to Professor Henely has been erected on the local high school campus in the form of a bronze plaque on a granite boulder.
