Every Effort Known to Science Applied to Patient Without Avail and Death Ensues After Four Days
HUSBAND & SON SURVIVE
Mrs. Pauline Bano Who Thought She Was Taking Headache Tablets Endures Tragic Death -- a pathetic Case
Bichloride of mercury tablets which she took on the night of December 28 caused the death this morning at the Mercy hospital of Mrs. Pauline Bano, aged 28 years, of 133 Lehigh street. The end came after every effort known to medical science was resorted to by the physicians at the institution. the death of the woman was expected from the time that she entered the hospital owing to the large amount of the poison she swallowed. Dr. Fischer who had charge of the case from the beginning never gave up hope however and did all that he could to relieve the woman of her suffering. On the night the woman took the poison she was bothered with a sick headache and arose to get some powders which she had in one of the boxes in the kitchen closet. She swallowed two of the tablets and went back to her room. In a short time she became deathly sick and the physician was summoned. The condition of the woman was at once seen and she was hurried to the hospital. All that could possible be done for her was resorted to by the staff, but the end came this morning. No announcement of the funeral was made this morning. Her husband and son, aged 3, survive her. The bichloride tablets were taken in mistake for a headache remedy. -- Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader, January 1, 1914
