David Ireland was born to James Ireland II and Sarah Bunnell near Miamitown, Ohio. He married January 13, 1849, Brownstown, Indiana to Mary Ann Sanderson daughter of Elisha Sanderson and Junia C Wright. David and Mary Ann had eight children, Theron Albin, Eucebia who died in infancy, William Puloski, twins Norvel and Thornton who died in infancy, David Vanimon, Junia Melcenia, and James Selby.

David moved his family from Brownstown, Indiana to Ewington, Illinois then to Chariton, Iowa. In 1860 he corresponded with his wife who was living in Iowa from "Nevadia District Cansis Teritory" in search of gold and silver. By 1873 correspondence is to Monmouth, Polk County, Oregon where David and Mary lived out the remainder of their lives and their children continue to live in Oregon.

Someone has linked David J Ireland as a son to David Ireland and Mary Ann Sanderson Ireland. David J was not a son to a David and Mary Ann Sanderson Ireland. Nor were the two infant children who are buried in Brownstown, Indiana. They were the children of D. J. and M. A. Ireland (David J and Malinda Ann. According to Bible records of family births and deaths, recorded by Mary Ann Sanderson Ireland, there is no mention of David J born about 1934 nor the children.

In 1850 James Ireland Sr, age 61, born Pennsylvania and Sarah Ireland, age 61, born New Jersey have two children living with them: David J age 16 born Indiana and Sarah Bunnel age 20 born Indiana. In the same census David, age 32 and Mary Ann, age 28, Ireland are neighbors to the James Ireland family. Assuming David J was related to James and Sarah, more research is needed to locate his parents.
