From Holland St. John - "Aaron was the son of Robert H. and Margaret (Burlison) Duckworth of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. He was born on February 21, 1835 on the family farm. Aaron was one of nine children born in the family. Little is known about Aaron's youth but it is likely he helped around the farm, did chores and attended local schools. On 4 Dec 1857 Aaron married Harriet Erwin at Mount Vernon, county seat of Posey County. The census of 1860 lists Aaron living in Black Township with his new bride Harriet and their one year old son Robert Hill Duckworth. Living with them were a man named McDaniel (age 35) and another man named Quick (age 18). Both were listed as farm hands. Aaron's farm was listed as the value of real estate $2,400 and personal estate of $400. The farm next door was owned by William Duckworth who was a distant relative of Aaron and his parents. A short time later, around 1861, the family moved to Franklin County, Illinois. Another son was added to the family: John Samuel Duckworth, born in 1862. It was on October 1, 1862 that Aaron enlisted in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Company L, 10th Infantry Regiment Illinois. By 1863 he served in Company F, 15th Cavalry Regiment Illinois and by January of 1865 had been promoted to Full Commissary Sergeant. However, two weeks after the last shot was fired in the Civil War, Aaron died of disease received while in the service on July 5, 1865 at Shreveport, Louisiana. It is not known where his remains were laid to rest. One can only assume he was given a military furneral either in Louisiana or more likely back in Illinois where his wife and two children were living."
