Fred was the third of six children born to Christian George Pape, Sr., and Mary Catherine Vonderhaar. On 01 Jan 1939 he married Catherine Matilda Wenz and they had four children: Elizabeth (Betty Jean); Carole; Fred, Jr.; and Diane. After World War II, and due to the resulting shortage of fresh meat, he started a hatchery and feed store to help people raise their own food. Later he expanded the store to also include power equipment, sporting goods, and archery supplies. The store remains in the family today and is known as Pape's, Inc.
