Jean Conrad Prall, 88, of Camp Hill, and formerly of Dunmore, died Tuesday at the Hospice of Central Pennsylvania home.
Jean fell ill and was hospitalized in July while participating in a long-running and cherished family tradition: an annual summer vacation for her three children, spouses and six grandchildren. All of them were able to join in the event this year, held as it has been in recent years in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The tradition began more than 30 years ago, before most of the grandchildren were born, when Jean and her late husband Bob would host the family at Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos. The bonds that developed among the grandchildren during their vacations together will be one of Jean's, and Bob's, lasting legacies.
The daughter of Howard and Selina Conrad, Jean Lorraine Conrad was born in Dunmore on December 2, 1921. As a teen she attended a dance at which Robert Leonard Prall saw her and decided she was the girl he was going to marry. He did, though not before World War II and volunteering for the Army Air Corps. Home from training on a brief leave, he proposed and they married the next day, October 7, 1943.
Following Bob, Jean traveled alone across the country by bus and train to Eagle Pass, Texas where he was training. They later moved to Riverside, California where he finished training and earned his wings a a B-24 bomber pilot. Jean often recalled the happiness they shared in those times, despite the world being at war, the daily danger of pilot training, and the certainty of combat that awaited Bob.
Jean returned to Dunmore when Bob left for the Pacific Theatre, where he flew bombing missions. Reunited in Dunmore after his discharge, Bob and Jean began the family that would be the most important thing for each in the rest of their lives.
A graduate of Dunmore High School and Scranton-Lackawanna College, Jean did some work outside the home but was primarily a homemaker – a highly accomplished and frugal one. A skilled baker and cook, she canned the fruits and vegetables Bob grew in his extensive gardens. She was a talented seamstress who sewed most of her children's clothes, taught both her daughters to sew, made quilts, drapes and slipcovers – and did needlework as a hobby. She always conveyed her optimism and can-do attitude to her family, and she leaves a legacy of kindness, caring and love.
As their children married and began families of their own, Jean and Bob thrilled in the role of loving grandparents, and were loved by all their grandchildren in return.
Bob died in 1996. Jean left Dunmore a short time later for Shillington, then to Camp Hill in 2001, where she lived until her death.
Surviving are their 3 children, Donna Jean Huston and husband Jon of Randolph, NJ, Jane Elizabeth and her husband Robert Gentzel of New Cumberland, and Robert L. Prall Jr. and his wife Cathy of West Lawn; their grandchildren Meredith and Marissa; Matthew, his wife Erin, and their soon-to-be born daughter; Kevin, Alaina, and Robert L. Prall III. She was predeceased by her sister, Edith Conrad Sturm.
A memorial service will be held Friday at Noon in the Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch Street, Scranton, with interment to follow at the Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dunmore Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Central Pennsylvania.
