In interesting item was put in the Carthage Press on February 17, 1885 about Mr. Badgley and his young niece.
It read:

AN ELOPEMENT

But it was Nipped in the Bud by Stalwart Kinsmen of the Lady in the Case.

Quite a commotion was occasioned at the Frisco depot Sunday evening. Just as the east-bound passenger train was about to pull out and as a gentleman and a girl of youthful appearance were boarding it, two men came rushing along the platform in hot haste. The older of the two who proved to be the girl's father, caught her by the arm and pulled her back while his disengaged fist was swung in threatening proximity to the nose of her companion.
The result was that the train went on without them. The old gentleman and his nephew, who was with him, after giving the "other fellow" a thorough blowing up took the girl between them and marched up town, while the "other fellow" followed sheepishly behind carrying the valises. The explanation of the affair is as follows:
The old gentleman was Mr. James Badgley, a substantial citizen of the county. His companion was his nephew. The young lady was his sixteen-year-old daughter; her companion was her lover, a widower with three children, and they were eloping.
The parties live about four miles south of Carthage on Center Creek, and the widower has for some time been paying his attentions to the daughter of Mr. Badgley in spite of the latter's remonstrance's. Finding the old gentleman unrelenting, the two planned an elopement, which was put into execution yesterday. Mr. Badgley discovered his daughters absence soon after she left home, and pursuit was organized with the result stated.
Mr. Jake Block was engaged to take the party home last evening, all but the disappointed lover, who was warned to keep himself scarce.
