PIONEER PASSES AWAY

Mr. J. P. Carnahan, one of Chariton's very early pioneers, passed away at his home in Chariton on Wednesday morning, August 2, 1922, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 14 days. He had been in frail condition for some time, but about six weeks ago he fell and injured his hip and has since been confined to his bed and has failed rapidly. Death was not unexpected, but nevertheless brings sadness to the family circle and to many friends.

James Potts Carnahan, son of Robert and Sarah Carnahan, was born in Butler county, Pennsylvania, on October 19, 1834. He resided there until he reached young manhood, when he left that vicinity and after visiting various points located in McDonough county, Illinois, where he resided for some time, and where he was married on December 24, 1862, to Miss Lucy Van Loon, only child of Thomas and Jane Van Loon.

In 1865, accompanied by Mrs. Van Loon's parents, they came to Chariton, and opened a general store which Messrs. Van Loon and Carnahan conducted for many years.

One daughter, Mrs. Jennie Anderson, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carnahan, and is left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father. One grandson, Glenn Anderson, and one great granddaughter, Dorothy Anderson, are also living. Mrs. Carnahan passed away many years ago.

Deceased was a successful businessman and had many excellent traits of character. He was deliberate in his judgment, firm in his convictions and resolute in his determination, and a man of sterling integrity, whose word was considered as good as his bond.

During his residence here of over half a century he had won a large circle of friends, who will learn of his death with deep regret, and who will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved daughter and other relatives.
