Mrs. Joseph Lance, whose maiden name was Mary Bartle, was born in Pennsylvania, July 22, 1823. At an early age she moved to Libertyville, Ill., at which place she was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Lance on April 2, 1845. After a period of time, during which they resided in Chicago and other places, they moved to Mt. Ida. To them were born eight children, six sons and two daughters. Her husband passed away eleven years ago. One son Anson and one daughter Etta preceded her. During her life Mrs. Lance has been a devoted Christian. She and her husband united with the Mt. Ida Baptist church Feb. 1, 1862. On Thursday morning, April 27, 1905 she passed peacefully away to the better land at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 5 days. There are left to mourn her loss five sons; George Albertus Lance of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Walter Scott Lance of Windom, Minnesota, Joseph Thompson Lance of Bridgeport, Washington, William Henry Lance of Ronneby, Minnesota, John M Lance of Bloomington, Wisconsin, also one daughter, Sarah (Mrs. David) Farris of Mt. Ida. There also survive her two brothers in California, one sister in Iowa, twenty six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Such a brief record of one of whom it may be said "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth." Her life of kindly deeds and loving ways made her personal influence a blessing to family, church and community. All who knew her best unite in speaking of her beautiful character, earnest religious life and devotion to the good of others. A large number were present at the funeral held in the Mt. Ida Baptist Church April 29, 1905 and conducted by Rev. H. E. Fuller, who spoke from the words "We seek a better country, that is an heavenly." She is gone to the better land but her influence will continue to bless those who remain.
