Elizabeth Jorgensen Leaning attended the American School in Tokyo. She studied Latin from her mother, who had taught at the school for many years. Elizabeth enrolled at Smith College at age 16. In 1940 she graduated cum laude with a degree in Economics.
Following graduation Elizabeth moved to the west coast and went to work for the Institute for Pacific Relations. She earned a Masters Degree in Education and taught school in New Paltz, New York; Montgomery County, Maryland; and Kabul, Afghanistan.
She married W. John Leaning. They were the parents of two children:

John Richards/1946
