William was a son of William McClanahan and Rebecca Mitchell. he served in Ohio's Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He married Rachel Rebecca Varvel (a daughter of John Wesley Varvel and Rosannah Bowen). They were married in 1863 and had eight known children.
