Rev. Isaac Crowther Armagost, taken from a writing by Howard Strawbridge, Historian:
Rev. Armagost was born May 12, 1823, in Center Co., Pa., son of Jacob and Mary Crowther Armagost. When quite young, Isaac moved to Clarion Co. where he married Elizabeth Stahlman, a close neighbor. Isaac joined the Zion Church when 15. He was licensed to preach in 1860, and ordained in 1874.
During mid or latter 1850's Rev. Armagost's family moved to Troy Twp. In 1864 they moved to Troy Twp on a flatland farm later known as the Kelly Proper Farm. Reverend bought this farm from the Luse Family for $1100.00.
After the original Plum and Troy Baptist building was erected, Reverend was one of the first three trustees elected in 1863. From Nov. 1871 until Nov. 1874 he was it's pastor. He and his wife had joined it on July 30, 1859. He was a Sunday School Supt., too. The church once close, and after it reopened about 1890, he briefly preached in it. After the old church burned in 1897, a new one was built nearer to the community, and Reverend was a trustee in this new building right up to his death.
He was also a member of the Plum Twp. school board when he lived in Plum the latter 1860's. He served a term as justice of the peace, probably in Troy. He was a slim, rather small man with a white beard. Besides preaching he also farmed. He and wife had at least 11 children, ten of whom reached maturity and married. His wife died on Dec 25, 1887, and he later married a woman whose first name was Esther Ann.
Rev. died in his Troy Twp. home of Brights Disease on Tuesday forenoon, Oct. 10, 1899. He was seriously ill for two weeks. His funeral took place in the relatively new Plum and Troy Baptist Church on the 12th with burial in Chapmanville Cemetery.
