Peter Brand was born Peter Brandt on November 3, 1839 in Hess, Anspach, Germany to parents Karl Friedrich Brandt and Maria Barbara Katherina Roos. Peter emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York, New York on May 4, 1857 on the ship Donau. After a year in Decora, Iowa he became Pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Casco, St. Clair County, Michigan, being ordained and installed in September 1858. While there he married Anna Wilhelmina Hein on June 6, 1859. Leaving Michigan in 1862, he served congregations in Eden Valley, Farnham and Buffalo, New York, then starting in 1869 in Washington D.C. He became Pastor of First St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh, Pa. on November 19, 1876. He and his first wife had eight children before her death in 1881 and he remarried Emilie Schember December 14, 1882 and they had four children. He died on January 11, 1918.

After several synodical changes, he joined the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, eventually becoming the President of the LCMS's Eastern District in 1888. Served as Vice-President of the LCMS beginning in 1899.
