He attended rural schools and Corning High School. He served with the Navy during World War II and then lived in Corning.
On May 29, 1954, he married Grace Jones. They lived in Cumberland several years until moving to Atlantic in 1959. He worked for Henningsen Construction, Cohron and Son, and Allied Engineering, Inc. as a mechanic. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and had held various offices on the district and state level.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters, F. Louise Sullivan of Thornton, Colo. and Linda McCann and husband Jeff of Silverthorne, Colo.; a son, Bernard James Sullivan of Atlantic; two step-daughters, Ellen Damewood and husband Harold of Silver City and Laura Martin and husband Frank of Perry; two step-sons, Terry Preston and wife Dottie of Corning and Mike Preston and wife Colleen of Dallas Center; three sisters, Betty Breitenfeldt and husband Victor of Prosser, Wash., Helen Finsen of Medical Lake, Wash., and pat Wermelskirchen and husband Lewis of Maryville, Mo.; a brother, Dr. Daniel Sullivan of Omaha; one granddaughter, four step-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.
Services were held Aug. 18 at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with the Rev. Thomas Pfeffer officiating. Casket bearers were Bernard James Sullivan, Harold Damewood, Mike Preston, Jeff McCann, Terry Preston, and Frank Martin. Burial was in the Atlantic Cemetery with military rites conducted by V.F.W. Post #3415.
