Described in his obituary (see left) as "A Once Prominent Railroad Man", Mr. Backus died at the age of 80. A native of Montgomery County, NY, he grew up in the town of Salisbury, and had lived in Auburn since 1835. Born into a family of very modest means, he had risen to prominence through his work with the NY Central Railroad. He was survived by his wife, the former Mary Hildreth, and six children. Mrs. Backus joined him in death six years later at the age of 79. The couple's handsome monument, which features an inscribed Gothic floral design in its tympanum, has toppled from its pedestal, possibly as a result of a severe storm or uprooted tree.
