He was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11. In his youth, Alberto was a national cycling champion in his native Uruguay, representing that country in two Pan-American games. In 1973, he and his family moved to Sydney, Australia, where he became a radio broadcaster, pioneering in SBS Radio (formerly 2EA) with programming focused on the migrant community. Alberto broadcasted 13 years for the Spanish-speaking community in Australia, especially for the South American migrant community. Up until the time of his passing, he was involved in many migrant charities, associations and radio shows in public and community radio stations. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, Alberto was coming back to Australia for work after traveling to the US with his wife for the holiday. They had been in the US for a couple of weeks to care for his wife's sister, who was having medical issues. They were supposed to return to Australia on Monday, September 10, 2001, but he decided to stay another day, while his wife stayed longer. Alberto was married with four children.
