Death of John Bowes
Mr. John Bowes died at Lafayette, Colorado on the 24th day of October at 3:15 o'clock. The funeral was held at Lafayette cemetery on Sunday, October 17th [surely October 27th]. Mr. John Bowes was born in Cumberland, England, and was 78 years old when he died, having just past his 78th birthday. He came to this country 22 years ago, at at [sic] that time was superintendent of the Simpson mine. He has been a member of the town board of Lafayette also was instrumental in helping to found the U.M.W. of A., and to build the first hall of which he was a member until past the age of paying dues and greatest regret was his failing health, so that he could not take the active part he always felt he should have done. Mr. Bowes has been a practical miner all his life, and with hard work and foul air which caused his death, is the natural ending of all miner's lives. He is survived by his widow, Mr. S.A. Bowes and son, Jasper Bowes of Australia, and Stephen W.T. Wilkinson. Although left alone they wish to thank their many friends, for their sympathy in the hour of their bereavement. Mrs. S. A.
