Joseph Izenstein, 77, of 131 Viscount Road, the retired 45-year owner and operator of the former Southwick Pharmacy, died Friday at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.

He retired in 1979.

Born in Springfield, he was a lifelong resident of the city area and was graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technical-sergeant pharmacist.

He was a Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Melha Shrine Temple, and a vice president of Kesser Israel Synagogue. He also held membership in the Rho Pi Phi phamaceutical fraternity and in Freedman Post 26 of the Jewish War Veterans.

He leaves two brothers, Samuel T. of Longmeadow and Dr. Louis A. Izenstein of Springfield; a sister, Ruth I. Hatow of Enfield; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be today at the the synagogue in Springfield, with burial in Kesser Israel Cemetery .

Memorial week will be observed at the home of Dr. Izenstein, 25 Oxford St., with morning and evening services. Harold R. Ascher & Son Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the synagogue, Heritage Academy or the Jewish Nursing Home of Western Massachusetts.
