Anna Fitzhugh, 1907-2006
Former Oak Creek resident Anna Fitzhugh died peacefully May 6, 2006, at the Heritage Senior Home in Palisade. She was 98.
Anna Koler was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Louisville to John and Mary (Heinz) Koler. The family moved to Routt County when Anna was a young girl. Her father and brothers were employed in the mines. She attended schools in Routt County and for many years was the player piano player at the Palace Theater in Oak Creek. In 1925, Anna attended beauty school in Denver.
On Feb. 1, 1930, Anna was united in marriage to Lloyd Fitzhugh in Steamboat Springs. The couple lived for many years in Oak Creek, where Lloyd worked in the coal mines. The couple later lived in Rock Springs, Wyo., and Dillon, where Lloyd worked on the water tunnel. They returned briefly to Oak Creek before Lloyd’s poor health forced them to retire to Grand Junction.
Lloyd preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1975.
Anna loved living in Grand Junction. Most days one could find her walking about town, enjoying the many senior citizen activities found there. She loved to dance and play bingo and was a fabulous cook. Although she and Lloyd had no children, she deeply loved her nieces and nephews and shared many wonderful times with them. She was a member of the Catholic faith, having been a devout member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Oak Creek as well as St. Joseph Parish in Grand Junction.
In 1996, Anna became a resident of the Atrium, where she participated with her friends in many activities, but she especially loved riding the bus to Black Hawk. In February 2006, she moved to Heritage Senior Homes because of her advanced age and failing health.
Anna is survived by one sister-in-law, Frances Koler of Rock Springs, Wyo.; nine nieces and nephews; 21 great-nieces and nephews; 25 great-great nieces and nephews; and five great-great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Anna is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Steve, John, George and Frank.
A funeral Mass was celebrated May 9, 2006, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Oak Creek. Interment was made in the Oak Creek Cemetery under the direction of Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Steamboat Pilot & Today
