CHARLES M. GRIFFIN, PIONEER OF COUNTY TAKEN BY DEATH

Charles M. Griffin, 96, Tehama County pioneer and one time an extensive landowner died last night at 10 o'clock at the Jackson hospital in Amador County, where he has been a patient for a month. For the past couple of years he has been making his home with a daughter, Mrs. Glenora Bigelow of Sutter Creek.

The body will be brought to Red Bluff for funeral services to be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Fickert's Chapel and entombment will follow in the memorial mausoleum.

Griffin was born in Athens, Ohio, February 5, 1861 and came to California at the age of 16. He farmed first in the Stoney Creek area of Glenn County, then moved to Paskenta. In 1888 he married Hannah Elizabeth Whitlock, member of a pioneer Paskenta family. She preceded him in death in 1945.

For many years Griffin farmed and raised sheep in the Paskenta community. He owned considerable acreage there and also timber land in the Coast Range mountains now the property of Crane Lumber Company.

The Griffins later settled in the Bend district where he operated a ranch and a flock of sheep until 1945. Following that period he made his home mostly at Long Beach. For the past three years he has been an invalid, dividing his time between the homes of his daughter at Sutter Creek and his son, Irving W. Griffin and family here in Red Bluff. He is also survived by a son, Delwin K. Griffin of Igo; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Griffin was well-known and had numerous frinds in this county, which was his home for most of the time for 80 years. He had an alert mind and was an unusually interesting person, particularly on Teham County history.

He was visited at the hospital yesterday by his son and wife of Red Bluff. They left there at 5:30 p.m. and were notified after reaching home that his father had passed away about 10 o'clock.
