Enlisted 2 January 1862 near Nashville, Tennessee and served in the 49th Alabama Regiment, Company D, Confederate States of America. He was captured 9 July 1863 at Port Hudson, Louisiana. Paroled 13 July 1863.

John Selvage married Elizabeth C Ledbetter on 28 December 1858 in Madison County, AL. She preceded him in death.

John Selvage married Sarah Ann Holley on 23 July 1871 in Marshall County, Alabama.

His widow, Mrs. S.A. Selvage living at Newcastle, Young County, Texas filed for his pension on 6 November 1929.
