Civil War Union Army Officer. At the start of the Civil War, he was an assistant chief orderly at a hospital when he enlisted in the Union Army in April 1861. When the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Regiment was initially organized for ninety days service, he was appointed 1st Lieutenant in Company A. He became Captain of Company A on June 4, 1861, when the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Regiment, was reorganized for three years active service. He was promoted to Major on December 1, 1862, Lieutenant Colonel on December 13, 1863 and commanded the regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. On November 1, 1863, he was promoted Colonel and commanded the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Regiment, until it mustered out on June 21, 1864. After the war Carpenter lived in Mount Vernon and Columbus, Ohio and New Albany and Logasport, Indiana. He studied to become a physician at the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College, graduating in 1876. In 1888, he moved to Seattle, Washington, where practiced medicine until his death at age 74.
