Rockport — Virginia "Ginny" Hawes, 93, died Aug. 31, 2010, at Harbor Hill Center in Belfast, where she had resided for the past three years.
Born in Rockport May 3, 1917, she was a daughter of Walter and Nellie (Bryant) Carleton. She grew up in the Midcoast, where she attended and graduated from local schools.

For more than 50 years, she lived in the same house on Pascal Avenue, where she raised her family.

In earlier years, she worked at School House Togs and for many years enjoyed her work as the baker at the former Sail Loft Restaurant in Rockport. She never drove, and even at the age of 83, walked to work most every day.
Ginny was predeceased by a daughter, Joy Elaine Rhodes; two sons, Freeman "Butch" Hawes Jr., and H. Carl Rhodes.

She is survived by a son, Donald L. Rhodes, and his companion, Nancy O'Keefe, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Debra Rhodes, of Rockland; a brother, Roland Carleton, and his companion, Virginia; four grandchildren, Dawn R. Harrison and her husband, Chris, Dixie V. Harrison, all of West Palm Beach, Fla., Melissa J. Byer and her husband, Andrew, Scott L. Rhodes, all of Rockland; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private interment will be in Sea View Cemetery, Rockport. (VillageSoup online 9/10/2010)
