In 1823 Ira and Sarah Woods had six children. With the death of sons Melanchton and Samuel in April of that year, only John G., Platt, Sarah and newborn Cornelia were left at home. Harlow,and Clarissa were born a few years later, but tragedy was to strike again and only three of Ira and Sarah's eight children lived to adulthood.

Here lies the body of Melanchton and Samuel Woods; the eldest was born the 27th day of June AD 1816 and died the 2nd day of April AD 1823 aged 7Ys 3Ms 2Ds. The youngest was born the 19th day of May AD 1818& died the 24th day of April AD 1823 aged 4Ys 11Ms 5Ds
